ARMISTICE DAY

While I've been doing my stint down here on earth there have been astounding advances in technology, men on the moon etc. but all these achievements would not have developed so quickly had they not been precipitated by the advent of war as best ways of killing people, then in between wars modified to more peaceful pursuits Why is it that mankind can develop so quickly in this respect. and at the same time be so backward compassion wise toward their fellow creatures.
The question is do we need war to progress competitively
or should we take time off  getting to know each other better

 ARMISTICE DAY
Every November we gather to see
 a four generation old documentry
where everyone featured from that time and World
is a black and white ghost in the pictures unfurled.
 Grainy spectres returned yet again
 re-fighting, re-dying, re-writhing in pain,
for a lasting peace, that with hindsight's in vain.
Examples of wills and letters are shown
of eloquent content since vanished unknown,
the copper plate writing testaments fill,
betray an extinct, lost language skill.

Sombre Presenter with camera crew,
 as Parliaments Ben chimes eleven
remind silent mourners lest we forget
 young lives prematurely in Heaven.
Sounds of the last post fade through trees
 heads bowed over lamentations,
falling rain dilutes the tears of assorted generations
Shattered survivors from distant campaigns,
salute chiseled out concrete moss filled names.
Then wended home on wheelchairs canes
 mobility cars, wet zimmer frames.

At night to scramble over tops in dreams,
jump to it lads Sergeant Major screams.
 Leaping over stuttering guns
hand to hand fighting, bayoneting Huns,
 son's and husband's seeping blood,
drown in craters deep with mud.
Maimed and slain, in vain bids to attain.

A  Will 'O' Wist  unachievable
negative unbelievable.
Ambiguous "Greater Good".

Nervous first-year pupil with grave naivety,
reads out loud her essay, on our bellicose history,
listing recent conflicts, in the air, on land, at sea,
global wars, one and two, Korea, Vietnam,
Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, the murderous fake Islam.

Glancing round at her listening friends
differing complexions,
why oh why can't adults, like us,
 work hard toward good relations

Please, Miss, I'm confused, not sure I understood.
Will "WE" as well, have to suffer for.
And What is, a "Greater Good"?

Ironically, whilst we like to think of the present fashion for
a global world as a good thing, it is also the case that
venturing into the greater world also sees thoughts and
deeds - of avarice and plundering - rise to the fore, in
some sort of hideous musical chairs game when nations
become aware of their opportunities (and needs?) and
sow the seeds of defensive discontent among others,
resulting in conflict. The generational nature of this
ensures that the situation continues, with justification
resorted to - pious propaganda to suit the circumstances
and satisfy any misgivings about cause and action.
Look back through history and across numerous national
boundaries and the scene scarcely varies.
The fact that notable advances in the ensuing peace
often result from the needs met in war cannot be
refuted but it should not blind us to the basic human
failing in obtaining a satisfactory peace that leads instead to war - wherever it happens in the world.

ken,
That `Falling rain` down to the `zimmer frames` sez it all about today admirably.

Was listening last night to our annual `sing all the war songs` performer (and she was good) Halt and lame or not we were all up dancin`...As for the blowing each other to pieces bit...That`s why Christ came. (It`s not his fault that no one listens)...In my experience (And I`m sure in yours) The really bad bits in a war were - mercifully - rather short.

I know it`s about our sheer cussedness and that:

`Sounds of the last post fade through the trees
Heads bowed over lamentations`

Is (rightfully) very moving...and that the question of that first year was quite valid. (But I`d bet that there was some other first year that she hated)

Good `posing the question` one though)

(And watch that `heaven` stuff...your slipping) ?

Well put. Your intro is very apt. Doesn't 'good' come from 'God'? As in 'good-bye' from 'God be with you'?
