MILFORD, NEW MILTON AND BARTON-ON-SEA

entry picture

(Just returned from another splendid holiday down there)

There’s few other places that I’d rather be

Than Milford, New Milton or Barton-on-Sea

On a warm sunny day as the wind gently lifts

The smell of the sea from the shore up the cliffs;

You might catch a glimpse of a buzzard or two

Spiralling thermally if no breezes blew,

Wheeling and mewing and quartering around

Then lifting in seconds a mile from the ground;

A chance to gaze out on the shimmering grey

Offsetting The Needles some distance away;

For while Mudeford Quay can be found to the right

To the left through the haze is the faint Isle of Wight;

And while you relax spotting boats on the sea

Take ten in a café with pots of fresh tea;

Blue rinsed old ladies, threatened and frail

Swiping at wasps with today’s Daily Mail;

You’ll probably find you’re the youngest sat there

As older folk dream of their earlier years,

Of long summer days when the sun always shines

As Milford harks backwards to far simpler times;

There’s few other places that I’d rather be

You're dead right, Harry. "Here" is better than "there".

John,
Feel left out...never been there.

Fifth line from the bottom...should the `there` be `here`?

(or are you saying it in Yorkshire?)

I`m assuming we need to repeat the title for a last line.

John, looking at your comment it looks like the cycle trail must have been the old track near Holmesley. Good man!

HI John. I'm going to go to your profile for the answer on this one! Don't want to clog up the comments here.

Hello Ray. We stayed at the Caravan Club Centenary Site about 1/2 mile from the Holmesley site. Are you sure about the railway track? We cycled on an old track from just outside Holmesley to Brockenhurst. I think it must go to Burley the other way.
Another brilliant old railway that's now a cycle trial is the Castlemain Trail. We do it from Wimborne to Poole. Beats parking charges every time!

Funny you mentioned Holmesley John. It still has its railway station (now a tearoom) no sign of a trackbed now. I've got one of those pre grouping atlases. A bit of fun for sure!

Thanks, guys.
We did enjoy the twin pleasures of Wimborne Minster and then Darmouth in June, MC. So we have ventured a little further westwards too.
Ray - we were actually caravanning at Holmsley earlier this month, though the seaside towns I write about were on the menu. Very pleasant indeed, especially the walk from Keyhaven to Lymington.

Wonderfully uncomplicated John. Meself and Mrs were in the New Forest during the recent storms overnight . Quite a different experience.

Lovely touches in this seaside holiday "postcard".
.....................................................................
And if you go travelling, heading westwards a way,
You find more to relish, overlooking Lyme Bay,
So glad you enjoyed your vacation JC
And there's much else awaiting...just take it from me.
One of my most vivid holiday memories was with family
crewing a yacht from the Solent to Dartmouth and back,
with my late brother-in-law as skipper one long-ago summer...seeing the coast from a different perspective altogether. .My poem "Sailing Days" was inspired by the
experience.

Indeed I was the youngest there, Graham. And the only one without a bloody pooch too!
Man City next up.

"You’ll probably find you’re the youngest sat there".

Bloody hell JC, are you sure it wasn't an out of body experience? Wake up quick!!

In all seriousness its a lovely snapshot, almost postcard like.

Best lines for me, obviously......

"Blue rinsed old ladies, threatened and frail Swiping at wasps with today’s Daily Mail"

well done sir! (2nd place 2nd place 2nd place etc etc)

Thanks, Steve. I tried to mirror the simple innocence of the place. You can imagine Captain Mainwaring marching from around every corner.
