Cat Nap

entry picture

(anger and alienation are not the preserve of the young)

There was a lot of stockings and wrinkled old tights

Snoozing time – not a pretty sight

Just down past the ankles some knickers were hung

The smell of piss was coming on strong.

The Saturday night beetle drive had already started

As Madge and her girls sprang into action

Deaf Millie slowly woke and opened one eye

Said, “Tonight of all nights there’s gonna be a fight”.

Millie don’t like it living here in this home

The girls have a clique and so Millie’s all alone

“They won’t talk to me cos I’m deaf and got gout”

Because she can’t hear they just shut Millie out

From beetle drives and lotto and from all the raffles too

But Millie’s had enough – she had it through and through

She climbs out of her chair and she waddles with her frame

She slowly makes her way to Madge and Millie exclaims,

“You’ve missed me from the beetle drive again, you lousy bitch!

The rest of you are fucking cows and she’s a fucking witch!

I wasn’t even sleeping, you scheming rotten crows.”

Then raises up her stick and rains down several blows

As Millie screams abuse, “Hey!”, bleeding from her nose

“It was a cat nap – you fucking hoes!”

Excellent JC. I read in Geldof's voice as well.

Jeez John, rough stuff. I'm pleased to see you've calmed down a bit since 2012....

About five lines in I went "Hold on! This is 'Rat Trap'!". And then I laughed a lot, not least because I heard it read in Bob Geldof's voice.....

Thanks. :-)

Brilliant. I can see how a gig by The Legendary Boomtown Rats might be exclusive and intimate.

Wow...strong stuff, even if I'm not familiar with The Boomtown Rats output (mitigation: I'm still stuck in the music of the fifties!). A detour from your usual path, JC, but worth following. My mother spent her last months in a nursing home suffering from the onset of Alzheimers, and I recall one man who, without warning, suddenly grabbed her arm - painfully - and wouldn't let go, driven by some mania that burned in his deranged stare. Scary. So much is hidden behind the closed doors of these place of detention from which there is no release "back into the community". A just cause for anger at their worst - and guilty relief at their best, perhaps. The downside of this age, when we wish to do the right thing but so often it becomes impossible.
