Charity Marathon Row

entry picture

We entered for a sponsored run -

Macmillan Cancer Trust;

All four of us determined,

“We'll do it – shit or bust!”.

We scheduled for last Sunday

And planned it quite a while;

A 10k run round Sheffield

(That's near enough 6 miles).

The team was Richard, Paul and Glen-

The four of us good mates,

But they are nobbut out of school

While I am 58.

We all agreed that I instead

Would do mine down the gym

And row, not run, on their machines

(I looked like Fatboy Slim!).

Great Success! I can relate;

They ran like lunatics;

It took them 60 minutes to

Complete “The Sheffield Six”.

My marathon was not so quick

(I suspect a fix!)

'Cos 4 hours later I had done

A gruelling twenty six.

They didn't give much credit

For the work I'd done

All I got by way of thanks,

“You did it on yer bum!”.

I cheated a bit with this. It's actually not new. I did the row in Sept 2010 when I was just a lad of 58. If we don't go away I might do another on my 60th birthday this year. No charity this time, just for me.

Well done John, for a more than worthy cause.

I hope you have a nice nurse to see to those blisters!

Regards,
A.E.

Cute poem. I myself am a veteran from the 80's.
Couldn't do this now.
Good writing, and cute poem.

JC - know what you mean about fit young sprogs.
When I was sixteen I was in a race WALK around
Hendon Aerodrome (North London) and did 6 miles
in around an hour! Your commitment was really commendable...
remember -
They also serve who sit and sweat!
