bucket

Born in a bucket

Brought up by bitches

Fed on red mullet

Schooled by old witches

Housed in a pig stye

Ensconced in a rat run

Dressed in drab tawdrey

Shod in old cat gut

A mother called Rancid

A father called Squallor

Shat on and spat on

Biffed by a truncheon

Jailed in a drainhole

Pissed on by tossers

Left on a scrap heap

Torn at by vultures

Last words on earth were

I’ve had it! Oh fuck it!

I wish that I’d never

Been born in a bucket.

Really enjoyed this, Ann. The stark words and vivid images came out and grabbed me by the truncheon!

This is a really fun piece Ann, although I have to say it annoys me somewhat, in that it's one of those poems that which subliminally "repeats" on me! Since I read it I can't get the beat or rhymes of it out of my head! (should it be tawdry/tawdrey?)

Born in a bucket - luxury! I used to dream of being born in a bucket - it would have seemed a palace to me!

(Anyway, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself . . . :)

Reminds me of tenting days with no toilet facilities - "bucket 'n' chuck it!"

I guess I imagined some gollum-like creature, sort of human - scurrying round the London slums in Victoria's day, if I imagined anything. It's just a load of words really, and YOU try writing a poem about a bucket! :)

Enjoyed this, Ann. It leaves me curious as to what it is, but I guess that's the point. Good flow too

For a writing group excercise - we had to write something with the title "Bucket".
