Rain after Snow

The snow made my road look clean,

grey-brown ruts and cracks became pristine,

and the cleansing power of the rain

only restored all the hidden shame

of broken paving slabs patched with tarmac,

crumbling kurb stones and crooked drains,

mismatched roof tiles, weeds in gutters

dog and cat shit now uncovered;

a washed up wonderland rediscovered.

I liked this as there is much more being said under the immediate images: "a washed up wonderland rediscovered" - there's an enjoyment of the "hidden shame" too!

quite different for you, Alison in contrast to someof your other stuff I've read I felt but I too liked the ironing affect of the snow, but the full piece is top x

I do love the snow and it's ironing effect, everything becoming rounded. Though its hard to get around after snow I'm always sad to see it go and there's something about it being washed away by rain that for me feels wrong. Almost as though, since it took the time to cover everything it should be allowed to melt in it's own time rather than be sluiced lol! Lovely poem.

Yes there is that to snow - it makes things look pretty for a while. I'm not sure my neighbour welcomes it much though - having had his fence knocked down twice this year and once last year by cars sliding on it...
Your poem reminds me of how I would love to bury dog foulers in ten tons of something very ugly and steaming.
