Ephemeral Essence
O you, ethereal presence who comes when the light fades
With misty gaze and voice like a murmur of twilight
Do not depart yet - I beg you, remain -
For every moment with you exhales a divine essence
The night, that lady of infinite veils
Has not yet whispered her final requiem
And my heart, captive and distressed
Struggles in longing, in an abyssal cry
Stay, sweet shadow clothed in flesh
For your absence wounds more than a thousand winters
Without you, even the stars grow more distant
And the clocks conspire with eternal silences
Listen - listen to this sigh of a wounded soul
Don’t you see I plead without voice, with my chest?
What is it in you that drives away my held agony
As if in your touch some sacred law resided?
The trembling flame of the lamp watches us
As witness of a fate yet to be sealed
And I, in despair, bow to your light
Praying only: stay, do not go rest now
Even if tomorrow brings doubts and madness
If the world outside dons coldness
Give me this night, just this one, as refuge
And you will be, for eternity, my only certainty
