Hotel Candles

entry picture

I see us both, in time
Two candles burning
behind the thin pane window
of a seaside hotel

Outside, wind and rain
rage hard against the faded awnings
and the flaking paint
of this inclement town

Our flames shiver
then bloom again
Such is life
and slow slipping wax

I’m consumed with all our years
and all the storms
and all the fuel
we burned in our love

I see us both, in time
reflected in the glass
I remain in awe of your light
as you add your light to mine...

Wow, thank you to Keshner, John, Hugh, Uilleam, Stephen, Aisha, Steve, Clare, Andy, David, Tobani and Yanma for reading this one and the 'likes'.

Thanks also Graham, David, Ray, Uilleam, Andy and Stephen for the comments.

The painting felt incredibly evocative and I knew I had to explore it somehow.

And Ray, 'pane window' must have rubbed off on me from all the DIY supplies websites I've been browsing recently. That's how they list certain windows types and I liked the unusual order of the words.

Thanks all! 😀

A lovely piece, Tom. It's strange how we associate English seaside hotels with awful weather!

A beautiful, elegiac piece. The candles and glimpse of the ocean through the window guided you somewhere intriguing. It has the feel of a Hopper painting.

Enjoyed the poem very much.
behind the thin pane window -
window pane would be more usual, I'm curious about little details like that.

There is so much in this poem to like. I began to pick out pieces and had to stop, there were so many.
I’ll just cite the last two lines! Perfect

I saw the attached painting and thought it might inspire a poem. It did.
