LOCAL NERO

Trainer barista soul sister

with logo burgundy T shirt

plays the chromium steam

as a long queue forms.

Old lady small dog wait patiently

soul sister with dreadlocks(I had thought a man) turns

ignores the deadlock of time

not part of the plan this delay

busy time of day.

Turns again for cake under cover

some turn away and leave

time simmers while card reader

makes recompense.

The coffee was poor I thought

I thought as I went out the door.

THE price of a cup of coffee on the high street has risen by a third in three years, research has found.

The cost of a medium latte rose by up by 30 per cent between 2021 and the start of 2024, according to data from the global manufacturer UCC Coffee.

In Buckinghamshire, where the research was conducted, the drink cost £2.75 at a Pret A Manger in 2021 but had risen to £3.60 by the start of this year.

Costa Coffee, Starbucks and Caffè Nero all had similar price rises, as reported by The Sunday Times.

According to Mintel, the market research analyst, the number of regular coffee drinkers who bought a caffeinated beverage from a shop fell from 89 per cent in October 2022 to 83 per cent in October last year.

Cheers John for the link. Nothing is sacred!

Thanks for your regional update Jennifer. It's chasing rainbows here - "flat white" has been added too but it really is hard to hit the spot every time - I wonder if it's really an art form getting the balance right. My poem I feel is an example of frustration - nobody's fault , doing their best etc being all we can expect! Hope all is well with you these days!

Agree with Stephen!!!! Once tried never again.Italian coffee is usually great, and none if those truly weird additions. Uk tea is infinitely better than Italian though, as here they don't use boiling water, just hot, and a teabag! Don't like those plastic cups from the chains either.

Thanks for likes Holden and Hugh.

Yes,
Stephen, I couldn't recommend the Stars and Stripes but our local one in Sainsbury's has re opened and bucked its ideas up and the coffee seems to have improved - I hope it's not the virus kicking in!

Penguin you do me more than justice ! It's a strange device to conjoin two words that don't really make logical sense, but seem to work in the poetry framework, thanks.

Yes David there is an irksome quality to the process of standing waiting, probably no worse than being a frustrated motorist - it's a horrible facet of unreal expectation. I remember being in Abbey National once for ages and on reaching the hatch asked if they did bed and breakfast. Went down like a lead balloon of course. I really like the Nero coffee but sadly on this occasion there was a big problem on board, I'll go back, just a blip! Re the brackets it was a sort of an additional thought which I think would not have scanned too well if not separated - like an aside I suppose. Maybe "I thought was a man" would have been neater, but it's not my usual trait!

John, I'm no expert in the taste zones of the north, but probably no demarcation on the global brand in local terms.
Sadly our local Costa has definitely watered down the brew so it seems, less coffee same price hovering around the £3.50 mark. We've got a bookshop who do great coffee, so there!

Graham, you are an unashamed connoisseur on the matter apparently and who am I to interfere with that? In my dim memory bank there are strong coffee and brandy moments and never finer than when thus mustered.

Give me the coffee that the locals drink in France anytime over these over-priced milky warm examples.
Tradition, Grand Mere, Maison Cafe, bought by the kilo in solid slabs. Perfect!! As for customer service Ray! you've nailed it!

I confess to being a Costa customer, Ray, although I would always use local coffee cafes in preference which are sometimes better and sometimes worse. Starbucks is like mazzy watter.

Hi Ray

A good example of our sometimes needlessly hurried days.

I'm curious why you would retain the text included in brackets. It might endear you to a particular reader whereas it just might lose you others, just a thought.

As chains go Nero is one of the better ones, I think.

A different chain, Ray, but I can still remember the horror of (briefly) tasting my first Starbucks coffee.
