THE WORD AND THE DEED

entry picture

Some 20-odd years ago I was having my eyes tested when the optician asked me,

“Do you have any trouble reading newsprint with your glasses on?”

“None at all” I told her.

She gave me a card with tiny writing on and I rattled through it quicksticks.

“Why do you ask?” I said.

“Because you will do soon.  I can see some deterioration in the muscles controlling…..” blah–di-blah-di-blah… (I got lost in the rest as I was looking down her front).

But bugger me!!!  Within 6 weeks I was struggling reading stuff and holding it at arm’s length like you see old gits do.

It was as if saying it caused it!

I reminded myself of this a couple of weeks ago when a long-time mate of mine and his wife came to stay at our house.  I noticed that he was wearing hearing aids.  I asked him about them and he said his hearing deteriorated very recently and very quickly.

And bugger me!!!  An audiology test at Specsavers revealed that I needed them too.

It was as if saying it caused it!

Don’t anybody talk to me about funeral plans.

It seems I’m safe for this season at least, Graham. And I assume, MC, that you are not aware that the Royal College of Nursing had never voted to strike before the current dispute.

I am probably ahead of most if not all of WOL contributors in terms of age and retain an ongoing circumspection about the
attitude of the medicos to matters of health. Many years ago, during a routine eye-test in my old line of work, I was told I'd
probably need glasses sery soon. This actually only occurredf
during the past few years when I adopted pharmacy bought
2X specs for reading and PC screen viewing, while able to
read a car index plate at much further than the DVLA minimum
requirement. I suffered higher frequency hearing loss due to
exposure to firearm use but still manage to hear most things
around me and use headphones satisfactorily for domestic
appliance listening. Have you noticed how many NHS ads.
are exhorting us to check in with our docs about this and
that at a time when Covid has thrown patient queues for serious illness treatment into freefall? And how today's
medicos opt to strike for financial gain at the drop of a syringe?
I now place them alongside lawyers for putting income
interest before client interest! Meanwhile - let's all eat well,
exercise sensibly and keep the brain busy. Mother Nature will
take you when she's good and ready!

A doctor asked me if I had trouble peeing. I said no
& bugger me! 6 months later, here I am standing waiting for the 2nd stream to arrive!
Funeral plans, John? 😆👍
