Alternative Facts

entry picture

My theory is as good as yours,

I am entitled to my facts.

We both have our opinions

But it's me that the truth attracts.

I saw it on the internet;

It’s as valid as your learning.

It says the world is flat and square,

Not round and daily turning.

And don’t expect me to believe

All this talk of global heating;

The weather’s always on the change:

Someone said so at the meeting.

The ozone hole is all a fake;

It was just a government plot.

They say that vaccines are designed

To disable us with one shot.

I know that we won the election.

Yes, the other guy got more votes;

But most of those were robots

Or foreigners brought in boats.

You claim we’ve landed on the moon,

But I tell you it isn’t so,

Because your brain’s a microchip,

So how the hell do you know?

A splendid piece of verse, MC. But here's the rub - what do we rely on other than objectively established facts? The rantings of Donald Trump or Fox News? Or how about the bloke in the pub? Or anyone with an X account and a bit of spare time? The title of this poem is the giveaway; there are no alternative facts, just lies.

And thanks, Aisha and John GE.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating,
One man's chat is another man's meeting;
Talking of warmth, it soon becomes heated
And "gamesmanship" is preferred to "cheated"!
Motivation take many forms in life
And ascendancy of belief like choosing a wife.
A week in politics is a reported long time
With unkept promises hardly seen as a crime.
No man's word can be guaranteed
No science relied on, or the absence of greed.
So, good luck to us all for continued revival
We'll need all we can get in nature';s game of survival!!! 😍

Thanks, Graham. This was a slightly flippant poem on a serious subject. I think that you cite the challenges accurately. More than ever, I think that we have to rely on expertise and real people (not always easy to tell, I grant you) who do proper research. I put the picture of the US Capitol on because it seems to be full of people who are mired in conspiracy theories: election denial, climate change denial and belief that vaccines are developed by the government to rot your brain.
And 'alternative facts' was popularised by the Trump administration to support all sorts of lies.

John - yes, I overlooked that one. Where is David Icke when you need him?

And my thanks to Nigel, Holden, Stephen A, Pete, K Lynn and Rob.

I know I am getting old but I'm afraid with AI, Deep Fake, and exceptional special effects , I do not think anyone can believe what they see these days or believe what they read of hear!

I think uncertainty will be the downfall of civilisation in the endgame, whenever that comes.

will the last one please turn off the lights!
