The Youngest of the Dead

(On August 13, 2023, a 23-day old baby girl was killed by Russian shelling in the Ukrainian village of Shiroka Balka. Six other people were killed in the attack.)

There’s an old saying: ‘live for the day’.

I managed to do that. Twenty-three times.

And then – you probably know what happened.

You may ask the question: ‘am I angry?’

'For missing out on the next eighty years?'

Well, perhaps, like lambs in the slaughterhouse,

I know no better. At what you don’t know,

Don’t expect, you don’t miss. So that’s all right.

Except, I do know life was all I had,

And now it has gone. I’m not that stupid.

The
"senselessness of war".

Sadly, it makes perfect sense to some;
follow the money and power.

A moving poem Stephen, and one I’ll not forget easily. Make an incredible point in a very stark way

The first person style makes this an altogether piercing piece Stephen. Difficult to say more!

Thank you for kind comments, Greg and Keith, and to Kevin for liking.

A tragic moment like this somehow crystallises the madness and senselessness of war. Whatever the wider political considerations, it has to stop soon.

This poem encapsulates the horror and senselessness of war. Well composed. Raw in content. A very good poem to make the reader sit up. Thank you for this,
Keith

Brilliant poem, Steve, crystallising this vile madness.
