The One you Used to Be

I want you to be

The one you used to be

Bright and fresh

And forever drinking tea

I want you back again

The one you used to be

Bright and bold

I want you back with me

It breaks my heart to see you now

Not the one you used to be

Now your thoughts are dulled with age

I wish I could set you free

I’ll always remember you as you were

The one you used to be

But I’ll be here for you, I’ll look after you

The way you once looked after me

One day, once again you’ll be

The one you used to be

It will be the day your heart stops beating

And your spirit will be free

Dementia is a terrible thing, even more so when you witness it up close. Thanks Stephen and Stephen for looking in

The best poetry is deceptively simple, Steve. This deserves to be widely read. Thank you.

All too familiar words brilliantly written, Steve 🌈
