FOR THE BIRDS

Sudden snow hit our streets last night

To greet our waking words

And for me, the sudden thought:

"What about the birds?"

As I watched a lone black crow

(it might have been a rook)

Picking its patient way to go

Peck-pecking what it took

From sparse offerings on the street

Weaving its wandering path

Making sure it dodged the feet

And the few passing peoples' wrath.

It struck me then how we forget

Our avian fellow creatures

When weather turns and they are met

With its unforgiving features

That keep humanity snug at home

With other things to mind there;

Whereas our feathered friends must roam

The streets for what they find there.

In cold deserted snow-strewn places

Devoid of the usual discarded stuff

That folk decline to stuff in their faces

Yet somehow proves to be enough

For the birds that now seem rare

In the sky and on the ground

This is the time we should especially care

And keep them fed where found.......

And see them safe and sound!

I've just been out to top up the feeder... From me and the birds in my garden; thanks MC 😃

There's an old saying, MC, that if you see a group of crows they're rooks. And if you see a single rook, it's a crow.
(or is it the other way round?)

We never forget them- they've just been given a load of seed.

Our pub landlady wonder why there are always pigeons knocking around-her heating's going through the roof, and the pub next door serves food-job done!

Always wonder how they manage to keep warm as well as fed.
Nice poem, as always.

I am at one with Bethany here.
Our bird seed arives in large sacks - no 'mixed seed' for them but premium sunflower hearts, best suet balls and some wheat for the pheasants. I agree with 'all the year round' and i agree with 'expensive' however I did get a little annoyed in summer when, at variouse times, I found a pigeon on the back of my sofa, a magpie walking up and down the hall and a male pheasant crouching behind the dyson in atempt to escape a beating from another male. Never a dull moment.

Bethany - many thanks for the quick comment. I live in the heart
of London and my poem was inspired by the view out on to my
local street earlier today. There is a pub next door and a cafe
opposite - both of which can supply scraps for our avian neighbours.

Believe me M.C.I never ever no matter what the weather may be like let our three bird feeders go empty. Yes it is a little expensive in order to keep them filled but what a show they put on for you as a beautiful reward. This morning watching them through a gap in the blinds was so funny! the big Crows and Starlings were getting stuck in and who is down below picking up all their crumbs but Mr wise Robin letting the big guys do all the hard work-cheeky little feller!
