Old Leather Balls!

Old style leather balls, with laces,

Were murder to play with when wet

They soaked in all the water

And, if you tried to head it,

You nearly broke your neck!

And yet, and yet…

Tot Temple and ‘Woodbine Wilf’ Oxendale

The stars of our Rillington team

Would flick it back and forth to each other,

As though it was as light as a feather,

And fire it into the net.

In Rillington there was no thought

Of holding back.

Each match was a battle, there to be fought.

In a tackle, leave your foot in!

Get your retaliation in first!

Football’s not just about taking part!

A win is a win is a win!

This was my early learning centre!

I was once stood behind the netting

At a Scarborough and District League game.

Near the end, Woodbine Wilf broke free.

He blasted the heavy ball left-footed

And directed it straight at me!

I was protected by the netting

As Wilf’s shot thundered in.

I was amazed by Wilf’s poise and power.

Entranced by his skill and grace.

He’d aimed the ball at just the right place!

But mostly I was just dumbfounded

How could he generate any propulsion at all

Upon such a heavy ball?

Thanks Stephen A. I did wonder if anyone would suggest that! Haha. Well, the 'old' part of the nickname is certainly correct! 😂

Modern players would head the ball and then roll around as if they'd been shot! Haha!

Thought you were going to reveal that this is your nickname, John 😉
Imagine modern footballers using one of these😄. Their sleek new illuminous boots would probably just shred!

Thanks Graham and do you remember heading the laces of the ball? Ouch that hurt! 😖

Thanks very much for the like, Julie 😊

Thanks Stephen. Yes I thought about the dementia aspect when I wrote it. We just didn't know. I loved those days though. Proper football! Woodbine Wilf was so called because he played with a cig behind his ear and a box of matches in his shorts. Great player, though! 😀

Thanks MC. I remember the dubbing. Made the boots last longer. Longer than my football career as it turned out! 😀

They don't they're born today, John. I remember that these balls were murder to head and I think some of the old players paid a heavy price for this in later life. You never hear of footballers called Wilf today, but it will come back into fashion at some point.

My memory recalls that those pre-Puskas boots had metal
toecaps that surely provided extra power to an old lace-up
ball. The whiff of Dubbin comes back as I think of those
footballing reflections of the lace-up high footwear generally in
social use back in the day.
