Gizza Game

entry picture

Matthews played for Stoke City

At the age of fifty or more!

Stan was moderately talented.

He could pass the ball quite accurately,

But he didn’t often score!

If he could play on in later life,

I’m asking myself, why not me?

Before you seek my elimination

From your fantasy football league squad

Consider the relevant legislation

Concerning age discrimination…

My CV is quite clear on this

I’ve just turned sixty-four,

But, you see, I had a paper round

Or I’d have played for a top team before!

I have put on a few extra pounds in weight.

But come on, Marcelo.  Is it too late?

You’d sell loads of outsized replica shirts

With BOTTERILL 64 on the back

And you could always deploy me

Simultaneously,

In midfield AND attack!

My dribbling is, sadly, not what it used to be.

Instead of running and jinking

All down the wing,

Now the dribble just runs off my chin!

Full disclosure.  Cards on the table.

I do have a dodgy left knee,

But the other one passes muster.

Just send your scouts out- then you’ll see!

Anyway, half of the Premier League’s injured

Or sent out to Hull City on loan.

I still have plenty of life in me,

So why should I play on my own?

My preference is to play for you, Bielsa,

But the pressing game isn’t my style.

You would urge me to harass defences

And I’d get there,

But it might

Take

A

While.

Go ahead, Marcelo. Gizza Game!

Thanks so much, MC. And those baggy shorts they used to wear ( WBA are still called the Baggies
And jerseys used to be just that! 😂 How did they manage to run around?!

We have hit on a Treasure trove of nostalgia between us 😀
There could even be a new poem!

I can still recall the excitement of those new style boots, made
famous as I recall by the likes of visiting Hungarian soccer ace Ferenc Puskas. How we coveted those sleek modern wonders!
Like the US service uniforms of other days, how they made our
own look so hopelessly old-fashioned.

Thanks MC. 😁 Your comments took me back too.. My grandma was convinced my football boots should have ankle caps, like Sir Stanley 😀 I think Sir Alf introduced the wingless wonders in '66.
Though my entire amateur soccer career was played out as a winger 😂

Sporting fun - much enjoyed. Ah yes...the two "Stans" -
Matthews and Mortenson - legends in their chosen game when
I was growing up. Wingers, as we used to call them then, didn't often score goals; they provided them to the centre and inside
forwards - as we used to call them then. 😊. .

Thanks Ursula. I don't know anything about football either, as my fantasy league position will testify! :)

Thanks, too, Stephen. II hope people will realise that my 'dissing' of Sir Stanley was a joke!
John Mac could certainly weild a racquet. I wouldn't put myself in that league haha 😀

Another brilliant one, John. I remember John MacEnroe, then in his late forties, being asked if he wanted to play for the US Davis Cup team. He replied "Well, I could lose as well as the guys playing now". It's never too late. It's still amazing to think that Stanley Matthews played into his fifties...
