The Final School Bell (St Margaret Mary's 1968)

The final ring of Junior School bell.
High into the air, caps rose and fell.
Loud shouts of delight I could hear.
At last their final Junior School year!

I looked and saw my brother there.
The same school, no longer to share.
My brother was a year older than me.
Now it will be sad without him to see.

Next term will feel strange on my own.
Big brother not there to walk me home.
Not there in the playground to meet.
To share our little packed lunch to eat.

He's off to Cardinal Allen...clever lad!
My final term without him will feel sad.
From my class window I waved farewell.
I really didn't want to hear that final bell.

Nice poem, Mike. Did you sing 'Lord dismiss us with thy blessing?'

A gentle reminder of the passing of time and life itself. I too
was at school with my elder brother for a while - and recently
said goodbye to him for a final time at the other end of life's
road...a road that seemed endless when we were young.
