SUTURES AND FUTURES

Excuse me if I don't wilt

Under post-colonial guilt.

History is chapter and verse of the past,

For better or worse, its die is cast.

If wounds persist requiring sutures

Then let those sutures be better futures

For logic will say that this much is real:

Keep picking away and no wound can heal.

Jennifer - thank you for adding your comment. The Grenfell Tower
tragedy is exactly that - a tragedy, with an ongoing enquiry to find
the reasons for its occurrence, with one QC already talking about racism as "the elephant in the room". The motives for this assertion
need clarification, not least for how it reflects on the emergency
personnel called upon to risk life and limb dealing with the outcome
of a blaze originating from a flat within the tower. Had the occupants
been from the English/British population in need of housing, what
then?

Agree absolutely! People are using perceived disadvantage almost a weapon. We must recognize the bad part of our history, (is any nation without it?),but I think all this recent clamour has created more division than anything else. Agree with Ray about the Grenfell Tower tragedy. That shouldn't have been possible.

Thanks, one and all, for taking the trouble to comment and to click
the "like" icon. It is depressing that this issue is adopted as & when
it is thought useful to bolster a point of view, sincere or otherwise.
Social cohesion not social division should be the aim and focussing
on negativity, general or selective, is hardly likely to foster progress.
It appears that we can be accused of "racism" and, if we deny it, we
can be accused of "white supremacy". This smacks of an agenda
that has to be confronted and challenged on both a personal and
political basis. Assumption is antagonistic to advancement in any aspect of life.

there is no blame. If we could have done it any better we would.

History is not written in pencil. You can’t take a rubber to it.

To quote Frank Sinatra " i'll state my case of which i'm certain." You have indeed Mark. I think if the current status quo really want to get to grips with the black problem, they could more readily address the imbalances inherent in the Grenfell disaster.

Leave all monuments in their place to remind us of all aspects of our history good and bad. Perhaps add one in a prominent place of shackled black slaves being branded with the caption..... to our eternal national shame. History is a two way thoroughfare

Couldn't agree more Mark. Acknowledge the past, learn from it and ensure the mistakes are not repeated...yes. But all this apologising and vandalism of monuments leaves me cold.

Good piece.
