No humans live here

in my dream

I follow a Shepherd

without a flock

to a far away land

beyond the blue remembered hills

we do not speak

l'm guided along

with signals made with his crook

I obediently follow

there appears before us

a foreign place

bathed in golden light

I saw no human habitations

stretched out in front of us

countless mounds of earth

neatly and uniformly placed

on top of a rich grass carpet

a wooden cross atop each mound

The Shepherd with

tears in his eyes

pointed at the raised earth

and told me in a solemn voice

under there is my flock

they were all deceived

by my masters

men by thousands

from the four corners of the earth

came here

but never went back home

the Shepherd guided

my trembling feet

back home

I woke to a new dawn

and remembered

the fallen heroes.

Thank you Philipos for your encouraging comments.

The gorgeous picture of poppies accompanying Po's recent blog was the inspiration driving me to write this work.

I think so long as people remember the sacrifice made fresh eyes and minds will continue to contribute more of these stories.

What a moving story and well written - how many more of these does history have up its sleeve I wonder. P.
