When I get home
From town
I like to put on some classical music
Vinyl, of course
Make myself a herbal tea
Snack on some seeds
Whilst completing a cryptic crossword
The Times, of course
I like to lie back
With a challenging
Yet inspirational
Piece of literature
Russian, of course
And as I drift off to sleep
In my Egyptian cotton pyjamas
I like to pretend

sterile (i am not)
I can barely meet the glances
Of my hospital corridor friends
Momentarily consoling each other
With eyes that say
‘You are here too
I understand’
But while they are here
To see their loved ones die
Or to console their friends
After an accident
I am merely lost
On the way
To the ultrasound unit
To see my new baby
For the very first time.
