Concrete

Concrete

(Source: The Guardian)

Our blue and green world's turning greyer

Every second we lay concrete down

After water, this concrete we're laying

Is the most widely used substance around

PostScript

Concrete is the most destructive material on Earth.

While concrete is how we try to tame nature,

it also entombs vast tracts of fertile soil.

Desensitising us from what is happening

outside our urban fortress

If the cement industry were a country,

it would be the third largest carbon dioxide emitter in

the world, surpassed only by China and the US.

To all nature-lovers, this is a sorry sight but this is what our lives have evolved into. Living in cement boxes we think we are more fortunate than our predecessors, mere fools we are. Sustainability is at risk.

Beautiful poem, Don. Thanks for sharing.

This reminds me of Joni Mitchell's big yellow taxi

Tending to cement scepticism about the approval given to builders
seeking to build across just about anywhere and everywhere these
days.
