Book End

I am the book

that was left behind

I was tossed out into the street

they said I had no life left

that I was just used up

but I surprised them

when I was rescued by a poet

who has a history of saving books

retrieving them from dumpsters

saving them like homeless souls

Now I will have a home again

a place that's safe and warm

and I'll be in a place of honor

it is so good to be wanted

even though my pages are dogeared

some even missing

the poet does not care

He loves me for what I am

a book is always worth its words

and always worth the saving.

I found a copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey on top of a parking meter in Oxford in 2003. Read it on the bus on the way home and it since became one of my favourites. So glad it was tossed and so glad I rescued it. ?

If wise we will not waste a book
but save it for another look,
a book is someone's heart and soul
we should take time to get to know.
