Chair

Chair

For a while I would not sit in your chair,

As if to preserve it,

Ready for you to come back in and sit down.

It’s hard not to sit down on the sofa and glance across at you,

You should be sitting there,

Doing the crossword, or having a sleep

Napping with your mouth wide open,

Hanky in pocket,

Fingers lightly tapping your chest.

Or watching the news, at an incredible volume,

Subtitles on,

Shooting the politicians on screen.

Now I find comfort to sit in the chair,

As if looking at the world through your eyes,

The greatest viewpoint.

The children like to sit there,

They say it is nice to sit in Gugs’ chair.

They are completely true, it is nice, it is soothing.

When reassurance is needed, I will sit in your chair,

It is ok if that happens little or often.

That chair makes me feel closer to you.

This is wonderful, thoughtful and touching. I loved the little memories as you recall them. Really great writing. Thank you for sharing.

What a great opening poem to post on WOL Ashleigh!

There is something about an old chair that can transmit the previous owner's persona to the current incumbent. Enjoy that chair!
