Heart Attack

Heart Attack

A pinkish intricate organ of finite life

complex and forever pumping life

Valves and arteries a tangled web

without which all life would ebb

Then all of a sudden it stops

as the last blood of life drops

A blinding flash unpredictable

hastens the ultimate destructible

Life submits to death´s dark kingdom

no more activity, inertia or boredom

One minute here with abundant life

then gone as if severed by a surgeon´s knife

A brief spasm of pain hits the chest

then it is beyond life where lies the rest

The heart shuts down, its lights go out

it is without doubt the final shout

The gulf between life and death

taken in a moment of violent stealth

This organ can pulsate for many a year

and sustain abuse and plenty of care

Yet it is this piece of human machinery

which after years of growing weary

Decides to call it a day and say

enough, have it your own way

Then the incarcerated spirit flies free

and that´s all that is left of you and me

Frightening! Liked the contrast of 'violent stealth'.

Soulful stuff about the unavoidable in life....with an appealing rhythm
to help put over the message - like the heartbeat itself.

Oh Keith, you surprise me. This is so good. I have not known you as a rhymer and was half-way down before realising it. Well done.....
