The Artist's Desk

entry picture

Always, I want to see
the place of work
I sit and wonder
of the artist’s desk
what trinkets, what tools
they choose

Always, I picture in my mind
the artist’s desk
and what blue-tacked postcards
what scribbled notes of inspiration
may surround it

Is it by a window
is it in a basement
Do they toil below a craning lamp
or by dim candle light
do they have a desk at all
or just a strong knee

Always, filled with nosiness
I love to imagine
the artist’s desk
the magic place
where they give birth
to what always was...

Not just a laptop there has always got to be a proper notebook, pen and crystals but it's not a desk at all just a little side table because my strong knee is best! Liked the imagery of this Tom.

Tom,

This poem makes my mind dance about as your words ask us to consider the venues in which we write and work, especially at home. A poem which teases the imagination and delves into our personal space, a place where we are comfortable, private and secure. A place where freedom is enriched by our surroundings and objects of some significance. I have a desk with a computer but only sit at it when transposing my work into type as I prefer to use a fountain pen and paper with a relatively strong knee.

A clever poem, one which stimulates the imagination.

Thank you for this

At the moment, definitely, "A strong knee," for me, although I couldn't claim to be an artist, so a strong knee's probably all I need. Great poem Tom.

Most times my 'desk' is where ever the inspiration hits me. Being an artist often times means being eccentric and manic and urgent.
