Don't Sell your Soul

entry picture

For my friend Ray, I hope you haven't.

Don't Sell Your Soul

I told him not to sell his soul

That it would be unwise

The devil cheats and always wins

The end is your demise.

I told him not to sell his soul

It would be careless and askew

Satan laughs at all the fools who follow at his shoe.

I told him not to sell his soul

That he would never get it back

To find success, you must be strong

You've got to stay on track.

I told him not to sell his soul

For he could be the one

That he should seek enlightenment

But not lose sight of home.

I told him not to sell his soul

The pain would never end

Agony and heartache

Will be your only friends.

I told him not to sell his soul

I begged him, please, do not!

Lucifer will tell you lies

He'll take everything you've got.

I told him not to sell his soul

To himself he must be true

And for those who love him,

Do the same.

Don't sell your soul

Don't play that game

Thanks so much Adam. I appreciate the comments. I know that the ending is not as epic as it could be. I wrote it for a young man who once said that he would sell his soul to make it in the music business.
I like to think that the story is not complete as he still has some growing up to do. I will definitely revisit this one.

I like your style in this very good poem.

The repeating "I told him not to sell his soul" builds up an expectation of a clever ending- a moral of the tale- some kind of punchline-
that doesn't actually materialise.
That would be a pity for me if I wanted the poem to be a great one deserving publication and widespread distribution. As a personal expression it is to be applauded.

I like it a lot.
