WITHIN LIES THE SIN

We live with sickness despite moving on

Beyond the ignorance our ancestors looked upon

And accepted as being a part of the life

They lived - praying that they might evade the knife.

But even today with human knowledge increasing

By the hour...by the day - via research unceasing,

It makes me wonder if illness is like a sin

Caused by our folly - from without and within.

Do we encourage the grim reaper's attention

By not paying heed  - or ignoring the mention -

Of how we are abusing our daily bread

By gluttony and greed and things that are said

To bring on disease and rot from within

Out of sight of our eyes and our idea of sin?

Not witnessed on view and thus free from doubt

Do we murder ourselves from within - and without?

Out of sight...out of mind...do we presume to defy it -

That insidious decay that comes with our diet?

Even now - with the benefits of medicine and science

Our determination to dismiss becomes deadly defiance.

Surely it's far wiser for folk to begin

To help heal the body from without and within?

Interesting thoughts MC, there's probably a down side to our relentless pursuit of knowledge and satisfaction! ?

Jennifer - certainly, the fates can seem unkind when the seemingly
healthy are struck down without obvious cause or warning. But
why add to the risks with our own wayward decisions when a little
care and consideration can reduce the former and lessen the
likelihood of early departure from this life?

Liked this one. Agree with the last two lines, to a certain extent at least we can improve or worsen our health by how we use our bodies - smoking - drinking too much - using drugs - eating junk food - not exercising - letting ourselves become over weight - etc. -sometimes, though, you know people who did look after themselves, and got some really nasty disease all the same.

Thanks for commenting, Brian. Straight out of ""Joke Box Jury" ha-ha.
We seem too ready to poison our bodies with stuff we consume.
Those lines were a mild exhortation for people to take more care
and avoid its harmful effects.
