Fight! Fight!

The magpies

nesting in the beech

began shouting

angry

to see a squirrel

in their tree

Attracted

like bad boys in the playground

more magpies

joined in

hopping from branch to branch

a harsh chatter

of anger

The squirrel

preferring a quiet life

left

by way of my garden

wall

Today the tree is silent

Magpies - intelligent and bursting with personality.
I once witnessed 'Magpie Court' in our field. About eight or so magpies were surrounded a brawling pair and vocally egging them on. When it was over they all flew away together best of friends.

The natural world is wonderful, more so because we will never fully understand it.Dorothy

This is all very interesting. We have a family in our back yard. Did you know each bird has a specific part of a chorus they 'sing' in their own magpie acapella. Learnt/taught? from birth. And they say we are clever.....?

Nice! We had other birds mobbing a squirrel the other day. Would it have stolen their eggs, I wonder?. I counted 27 magpies in a poplar the other day. Others were fascinated too, and we concluded it was either a Trade Union meeting or the tenants of a condo, as they were so noisy!

Readily able to picture the scene. A magpie is a handsome bird but
has the sinister nickname "butcher bird". Maybe the squirrel was
aware of this reputation.
