They were only saying their prayers

It might have been the other side of the world
and people I'll never know
It might have been folk I'll never meet
and somewhere I'll never go

But the tragic news this morning
hit me like a train
Innocent defenceless people
mercilessly slaughtered again

They were only saying their prayers
just going about their lives
Another attack on humanity
a worrying sign of the times

There is no justification
Your reasons won't ever make it right
You will never speak for all of us
It's in your name, not mine
It's with our brothers and sisters
that we will stand in line

In Christchurch, New Zealand
They were only saying their prayers
For humanity's sake and theirs
They were only saying their prayers
When will the world see sense
They were only saying their prayers
