8 Heroes

Instruments packed away in velvet red case.
3 Chellos, 3 violins and the big double bass.
Quietness descended all over the huge ship.
Just 5 days in to her Atlantic American trip.

The band had just performed their last show.
Entertaining passengers with string and bow.
But tragedy struck as the hour became late.
Then the quintet and trio that night became 8.

As the minutes passed by and lights turned red.
The band played on, amongst panic and dread.
The fractured ship was damaged beyond hope.
Flares lit up the cold sky, boats lowered by rope.

But the brave souls of the band still they played.
They accepted their fate, as they saw hopes fade.
To their final tune of ‘Nearer My God To Thee’
The 8 courageous heroes where lost to the sea.

Mike,

A poem which I immediately associated with the film of the Titanic. Brave indeed were those musicians. Your poem does them credit.

Thank you for this

Keith
