The Mellow Years

The Mellow Years

I was told that age would make me mellow

that anxiety and impatience would fade away

Such predictions brought about a yearning

for the twilight years to pass serenely unto death

Not so, let those who forecast such a time

be told that I have grown intolerant and irritable

I excel at being rude particularly in public

and shout at television whenever the news comes on

I have become a grumpy old gargoyle

my politics have swung dangerously to the right

My love of military music and uniforms has been renewed

If a revolution is in the offing, here I am send me

personally I revel in being a grumpy old git. Even though I am not completely old yet.

Probably older than most who contribute to this site, I do
not automatically fall into the "angry" OR "forgiving" pack
identity but prefer to employ hope eternal in humanity's
ability to somehow get by despite the idiocy that can appear across the generational spectrum. That said -
Age can rage
At what is perceived
When it knows that the page
Cannot be believed,
Or words that are spoken
Are merely a token
Not acted upon
No sooner said than gone!

Thank you all, but I need to explain that I wrote this from the perspective of another person who is known to me and does not share my philosophy on life. Your reponse has been interesting nontheless.

I shall now cancel my holiday to Nuremberg.

..to merely leave a "like" might indicate that the humor is lost on me.

Aside from saying that the final two lines cut satirically right into the heart of the matter, I have to express a certain amount of frustration at the deeper truth involved--it's frightful and terrible to witness the devolution of a man's mind. Somehow we are reared to believe that wisdom should increase with age, building upon the foundations of those we look up to--sadly, this is not always so.

As I said, it cuts right to the point, in any case.
