Dogmatism

entry picture

You seem to take a strange pride

 in believing that it’s true

your land of invisible people

who only talk to you

you act like it’s okay to deride

such other points of view

as you’d dismiss as “materialistic”

and conjure up strawmen

like: we deny the awe of existence;

know enough to survive

you argue we are cynical

I’m cynical – it’s true.

Frankly, few people I’ve ever met

are more that way than you!

Let’s examine the first point first shall we –

... awe of human existence...

You, who know I put no limits on

all that the cosmos sings

and state that abstract concepts, whilst

not matter, are “things”,

know I’ve figured in such detail

 what we seem to be

but retain my fascination

and philosophise on

and investigate with relish

each further mystery

in what would seem to be “the world”

and then, time allowing,

might join you in investigating in

your “land of the fairies”.

Next: only know enough to feed

the needs of... survival.

These are the words of someone

not au fait with the verb: know

and believes he has a soul somewhere

that others are without

I know with certainty two things.  Then:

things of which I’m confident,

the rest I’m sure about; after that

I’m open-minded –ish

You see for all this pompous piety,

everyone’s deluded except you

(in your land of invisible people

who only talk to you)

We at least tell you what we believe,

and for why,

instead of insisting it’s true.

I missed this, Dermot. It is really good. Is 'strawman argument' your brainchild, or a common usage I've just missed? Whichever, it is an excellent observation about contentious, useless discussion.

'Written in stone' is hilarious. More like 'hammered' eh?

I'd agree that discussion is good, and say that even that banter and mickey-taking are good in regard to other people's beliefs. What I was objecting to in this one were a) the idea of claiming superiority, and b) the strawman arguments (i.e. not finding out what another person's beliefs, making an assumption as to what they are, and then arguing against your own assumption).

I've done a lot of thinking before actually commenting on this Dermot and i've decided not to go into what i personally believe. Tempting though it is.
So, in essence, i agree with you on the principle that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and that no-one should attempt to foist theirs on anyone else but discussion is good.

I think i got the gist of it.
Enjoyed the rhythm in this too.
Very thought provoking. Well done.

An interesting poem Dermot and I can see where you got your inspiration...I'm not so sure I would agree that you are 'open minded-ish' unless you have changed your mind about certain things recently. I do agree with you that, if we have souls, everybody has them, regardless of personal beliefs. I also believe that you don't have to believe in a God to be a good person or have an 'aristocratic soul'. What we all need is tolerance. We need to supress that human urge to rubbish the beliefs of others. Someone should write a poem on that.

Excellent stuff. And agree with you wholeheartedly! I do, however, have a land of little people, invisible to everyone but me .... and sometimes I kind of enjoy wasting an hour or two creating havoc in the lives of my Sims. I'm just not sure that they believe in me.

Love the title DG.
This is very cleverly written...
and I don't think I would want to argue with you!

This is my favourite verse... ; )
