Keeping Up Appearances

Lies and damned lies, political promises,

Sound bytes all studded with prevarication;

Eloquent rhetoric, doesn’t care what he says,

Carefully crafted to hoodwink the nation.

Stands tall and true like like a sturdy young oak,

A trustworthy face is his expertise;

Everything hidden with mirrors and smoke,

Smooth obfuscation to hide all the sleaze.

Adopts cause célèbre at the drop of a hat,

Bandwagon jumping with consummate ease,

Dropped like a hot cake when discovered that

It would end his career like a toxic disease.

Keeps up appearances, that is his strength,

No programmes or policies found in his speech;

Says not a lot at extravagant length,

While draining the purse like a blood-bloated leech.

These are the people that want to rule over us,

Blind us with dogma, tell us what to do;

How can we let them do something so odious,

Can’t we just sack them all, start out anew?

Some politicians I am sure start off with good intentions..but..as Lord Acton so eloquently put it 'Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely'
On that basis what chance is there..enjoyed the poem thank you..❤

I guess if there are more forward steps than backward ones that is the best we can hope for. Good piece Trev.

The distrust of politicians is historical - go back to Thomas
Rowlandson and his damning depiction of the would-be
MP seeking votes. But somewhere amongst the chaff there
is wheat and we have to hope it is cultivated to our benefit.
Each mainstream political party occupies various faultlines.
Not one is 100% trustworthy in fulfilling its promises when
seeking power. But the system has proved to be better than any alternative on offer as long as we can change
those who choose to impose their decisions upon us. The real danger comes when we can't.
