The Voice of the Commons

Goodbye to the common land.

Goodbye to our pensions.

Goodbye to free school milk,

and goodbye to fair rent.

Goodbye to a job for life.

Don’t expect a contract.

Farewell to the greengrocer,

selling fruit in paper bags.

Farewell to the council house.

They’re selling off allotments.

The end of days for the bursary.

No more power to the unions.

Here are the days of zero hours.

Say hello to debt for life.

Here are the days of fake news,

and exponential wealth divide.

Here are the days of mass extinction,

closing eyes to climate change.

Here are the days of the corporations’

off-shore tax-free havens.

Here are the days of oil pipes leaking.

Here is the time of the internet troll.

Here is the age of propaganda,

the living threat of mob rule.

And yet,

Here too are the days of global networks,

dissemination of knowledge.

Here are the thousands that stand in protest,

sharing hope and solace.

Here is the means for a new kind of union,

waking up to justice.

Now is the time for revolution.

We still have our voices.

Janey,
This is a masterly piece of work in which you have expressed the thoughts of many. The final stanzas are filled with hope where we need to focus our efforts to stem the tide which you so eloquently portray in the main body of the poem. Well done and well earned. Congratulations
Keith

Very good Brian ? that line is a bit cheesy I guess.
Actually I’m referring to the loss of local businesses due to the rise of supermarkets, fueled by capitalism.

We might still see the return of paper bags though. I hope so.
