Those of Maturity

To those who have drifted past a certain age

With some going through to the next stage

Where maybe we see the wrinkles, grey hairs,

and extra pounds.

With changes already showing up,

or just waiting around.

A look at pretty twenty five year olds, a sigh.

But not too long ago we were all twenty five

Just like us, one day, they’ll be our age too

What they bring to the table

with their youth and zest for life,

we bring our wisdom, experience

good hearts, good husbands and wives.

For all we’ve been through, each grey hair

Worries, crazy relationships, kids everywhere

Family struggles, arguments, whatever else,

life has thrown at us, our problems with health

We survive as warriors, men and women of stealth.

The outer exterior maybe not as once was

But it’s traded for spirit, courage and strength,

to enter this chapter of life with pride and grace,

to prepare for a different kind of race

With all we’ve experienced, and accomplished

We must never feel bad about getting older

Its a privilege to be there for family and others

A wise lifeline, and a shoulder to cry on.

I totally agree, I was only discussing earlier with a radio presenter, the fact that we can mature in all sorts of different ways as we get older, and have much more to offer. Thanks both.

Spot on!
I am minded to add my own view to the line beginning...
"We survive..."
We survive as warriors with our own kind of wealth".
GB Shaw observed that youth is wasted on the young - and
that can invite a variety of interpretations. I tend to think
he meant that we have to reach a certain level of age and
understanding to realise what a gift it can be (if you're
lucky!).
There is song sung by Sinatra called "Man In The Looking
Glass" - a wry affectionate musical nod to the ageing process.
