A SONG OF PATRIOTIC PREJUDICE (Pt 2)

entry picture

(So we seem to have established that a very graphic poem about slicing up a woman, my last post "Minor Sin", was accepted by the Board of Censors but that my previous poem about taking photos up their skirts was not.  I wonder about this one, also previously posted with no objections, with its obvious superficial racism)

The nation has got in a hell of a state

Let’s get out of Europe and make Britain great

Let’s pull up the drawbridge and then start anew.

And blame it on Hollande and Merkel’s EU.

This European Union is quite a rum do

We English are much better off without you.

We’ve fought for the Belgians and we’ve bailed out France

We’ve given the Jerries a kick in the pants

The cowardly Ities – well, they ran away

And Dutchmen are known to be stoned every day.

This European…

Estonia and Latvia are Russia by name

And Lithuania – well, that’s just the same;

Slovakia, Slovenia you can’t tell apart

And a bus in Bulgaria’s a horse and a cart.

This European…

If I need a plumber I won’t call a Pole

And clearly Romanians are all on the dole

And Austrians can’t resist doing “Seig Heil”

They’re thick as potatoes in Ireland’s green isle.

This European…

The rest is a mish-mash of turnips and Swedes

The Spanish, the Czechs and Croat in-breeds

They’re foreign, dishonest and up to no good

And don’t have an ounce of true Englishman’s blood.

This European…

Yes indeed, Brian. One can imagine how difficult that must have been for Europe.

Fog in the Channel - Europe cut off.

(50's Times headline allegedly.)

Point(less) taken, JC. But not for the self-righteous who see
offence lurking around every corner and a cause to be taken
up. What fun for the more even-minded who look on and
occasionally add their two pence (old money and old values)worth. ?

Being offended is possibly the most pointless of human conditions, MC.

That may be so, JC, but you know that there are always
those who seek the chance to be seen to be on the side
of prevailing "fashion", in whatever regard, and relish the
chance to show their proclivities in that regard. In today's
fluid sensibilities, there is no real fixed point of reference
and it becomes a subjective choice for those who occupy
the position of checker-upper to decide according to their
respective opinions and, dare I say it, prejudices, if my own experience is any guide.
Thanks for the correction - I took a chance on "Swan" without the added n...not being sure at the time of posting.

Not at all, MC. I'm simply trying to clarify in my own mind why a poem is objectionable or not.
And indeed, if this is objectionable we should ban Flanders and Swann!

Ooh...you are SO provocative!
I had a guilty chuckle, recalling some words from Flanders
and Swan -
The English, the English, the English are best -
I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest!
To adapt a famous line from a much-loved TV comedy
series of yesteryear:
We didn't get where we are today by being NICE to other people!
