Thirty-nine bodies

                lay on the ground

                in the summer sun

As I watched

                workers carried two more away

Around me

                life continued as usual

                a hum of activity

                oblivious

Thirty-nine bodies

                on that square of concrete

                that summer afternoon

As I watched

                saddened by their sudden deaths

Around me

                a thousand more bees

                collected pollen

                for the hive

Thanks Colin (and Darren) - I didn't want to make it too dramatic - although for me as a novice beekeeper, it was a little unsettling - but felt the late denouement would make readers think. It seems to be all fine down in the apiary now!

excellent Chris - could be about so much more than bees - the kind of poem that builds and builds and finally blows your mind. Col.
