southdown road

A house of many steps

Up to the front door

From the pavement

A house of black and white tele

A house of Coronation street

Emergency ward ten

Richard the lion heart

Sir Francis Drake

Dr Who and the Daleks

From behind the sofa

On Saturday, the football results

A litany of the practiced and rehearsed

In careful sparing tones

A countdown to robin Hood

Or the lone ranger

A house of carrots, potatoes and cabbages

Of dahlias cucumbers and lettuce

Home grown all in rows

A place for tiger Tim my ginger Persian

Long haired cat

To stalk and catch unwitting low flying birds

A house of steak and kidney or blackberry and apple

Pudding

Steamed in bowls topped with greaseproof paper tied up with string

A house of students from Germany, Italy and Iran

From France, Belgium and Spain

A house where every bonfire night

Every other house had a bonfire and fireworks

Shooting rockets at a neighbour’s house

No phone

No car

And TV that finished at half past ten

In this three bed, semi 1930’s built dream

A house in winter of snow two feet deep

A house of houses one after another

Called a road

A house where down the road

And round the corner the sweet shop

With four a penny chews

Black jacks, fruit salads and sherbet fountains

A road where it was safe to play in

When you are not yet six

◄ Another birthday

A road unchanged in fifty years... poetry itself

well I did wonder Martin and I did also look on Google maps but there were quite a number of Southdown Roads. The name is particularly synonymous with Sussex especially the buses of course. But Portslade / Mile Oak were always just outside of my territory which seemed to end at Kingston Lane where I went to school at KM. And yes, it's all still very recognisable but a lot more congested and crowded. I like the poem even more now! Cheers, Col.

Thanks Colin, Patricia, David and Desmond for reading and liking. This is a piece of my childhood and what I remembered of it. I am not sure if you might know this road Col. It is in Portslade just up from the village. The road itself hasn't changed much in the last fifty something odd years, but there has been a lot more house building in the area.
Thanks once again one and all for reading and comments.
cheers
Martin

you've just described a whole chunk of my childhood Martin - especially the hiding behind the sofa during Dr Who. Mum was usually doing the ironing. Col.
