Before you.....

Before you......

I was born eleven years before you

into a world which was very different

of which you can concceive so little of

With your parents you travelled

from one continent to another

educated in different cultures and languages

You developed a sophistication

a world view very different to my own

I lived in a dull grey post war Britain

in a street where all the houses were alike

I experienced drudgery a blind dullness

amongst the unimaginative and weary

A mediocre education which afforded little gain

You were given a vision and opportunities

to grow develop and realise your ambitions

I was repressed, a no hoper

I loathed my childhood and its surroundings

The signs of war were everywhere

When you arrived these had disappeared

giving way to a modern brighter vista

Eleven years, two people, yet poles apart

I always envied you

Keith, other people, can help us to widen our view of life and its many aspects. Others are toxic, Poets for the most part are much less shallow, and are attuned to thoughts and feelings on a higher level. Introspective, expressive, inquisitive, appreciative, honest, thankful, more acceptable to learning new thoughts, ideas, viewpoints, shun prejudice, and many more good qualities, oh I better add humble. Keith,I enjoyed this poem enormously,
its rings true for me because I have been limited in certain life experiences though slowly working my way through my list.
A honest and well written poem.

Keith,
If this poem is speaking to a romantic interest the book and movie 'The Notebook' come to mind when reading this. This also sounds a lot like the relationship I have with my sister who is 10 years older than me. Things were not available to her the way they were to me when I was born much later. Excellent writing. I've added you to my favorites.
