The End Of Time

The sun sinks slowly behind a distant horizon,

It’s dying lustre, once a raging cauldron of power and light,

Now merely a spiritless glow in the darkening sky above.

Silently descending ever closer toward its grave.

No more the proud ruler of a mighty solar system.

As it expires, we too are drawn unceasingly to inevitable doom.

Unseen light that first began to fade over distant planets.

Extinguishing alien life forms we could only ever have dreamed of,

Now turns to us, passing sentence over our own self-important existence.

Darkening the lives of our children, those entrusted to shape

The future, born to secure our precious earthly dwelling before time expires.

Realising too late that countless, ignorant generations, White, Black, East, West

Have ruined their chance.

On Earth hate and fear continue to rule, nourishing the politics of war.

Peace no longer allowed a place at the table during our petty human squabbles.

No compassion remains to adjudicate in this unscrupulous

World of envy, greed and violence.

We protect ourselves by constantly developing more shocking weapons

Irrecoverably destroying our planet as we do so.

And by choosing to ignore the facts, we bear witness to the death of civilisation,

Happily dragging our innocent children with us…

Hello John, I am not given to using the word ¨masterpiece ¨but this poem qualifies for the title. The two opening stanzas are magnificently written and the poem in its entirety is one you should be inordinately proud of. Thank you for this. Keith
