'Going, Going, Gone' by Jeff is Write Out Loud's Poem of the Week

entry picture

The Write Out Loud Poem of the Week is ‘Going, Going, Gone’ by Jeff, about a failed relationship. Jeff says he has been writing poems for the last two years. He says he is no expert on poetry, but it has always brought out “emotions in me”. His political hero is John Cooper Clarke - “he is and always has been an inspiration”. He memorised JCC's 'I married a monster from outer space' and recited it to his children when they were small: "They loved it!"

How long has poetry been an important part of your life, and can you remember why it became so?

Poetry has always had the ability to bring out emotions in me, inspire me and given me food for thought. I read many different styles from contemporary to classics. I simply like what I like, regardless of the writer.

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing things down for about two years now. Previously they were just thoughts and conversations. I write about things close to me with varying "styles". Some upbeat in the style of John Cooper Clarke, some sad and stuff in between. I'm no expert on poetry. I just like what I like, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of putting thoughts down on paper.

If you could only have one poet’s work to read, which one would you choose?

An easy one for me - John Cooper Clarke. He is and always has been an inspiration. His poem ‘I married a monster from outer space’ was the first poem I memorised, and also recited to my kids when they were small. They loved it!

You're cast away on a desert island. What's your luxury?

My iPod, for sure.

GOING, GOING, GONE

by Jeff

Push the button, light the cord
Too slow
Quiet storm
Operator, switchboard!

Say hello, say goodbye
You say yes
You say no
Operator, standbye!

Hold a look, try realign
Hold your hips
Kiss your neck
Operator, hold the line!

Hold my hand, send me images
Magic beans
Pied piper
Operator, accept all charges!

Tried, couldn't reconnect
Mumble, stumble
Lost for words
Operator, disconnect.

This poem is one BIG modern metaphor, which helps to make sense of a 'disconnect'. Well done for creating such an interesting image.

Nice jaunty feel to this Jeff : I can almost see a sequence in a musical . I believe you can rustle up different moods really well, so congratulations on doing the business on POW. Feels good doesn't it!

Thank you, means a lot. The main thing is people take time to read what we all write. The majority of people's work posted here is highly personal & lets people into their lives, fears & happiness - a very endearing human trait.

Take care.......Jeff.
