WOLOP Award

Write Out Loud Outstanding Poem

For some time now, there has been dissatisfaction at how the POM is chosen.  I, like many others, do enjoy being introduced to poets and styles of poetry I wouldn’t otherwise have come across.  POM fulfils this need and usually places on our homepage a poem of unquestionable quality that may well attract newcomers to the site. However, as a reward or incentive to existing site members, I feel POM falls short, despite the best intentions of all concerned. I am therefore proposing to set up a more casual competition to run side by side with POM, where site members will vote on blogs posted in a particular period.  This will be called the WOLOP award " Write Out Loud Outstanding Poem.

RULES

1    Every WOL member gets one vote to be sent to me by email

farmoorgirl@yahoo.co.uk - I may split people alphabetically and insert

another email address, if the award takes off.  Votes to be received by 7th of

each month for the previous month.

2        The competition will be open only to blogs during one month 1st-31st.  I will not be accepting profile poems since they are covered by POM. We are now looking at blogs from 1st September " 30th September (40 already), so get reading.  Please wait until the end of the month before voting - otherwise you are choosing not to read or closing your mind to other work.

3        There is no financial reward " just the kudos of knowing your work was appreciated by the majority of your fellow poets.

4        I will not be inviting people to savage the chosen poem " a sport which happens often with POM.  If the chosen poet chooses to receive critical feedback, he or she must post it somewhere else for that criticism " maybe on a discussion thread.  Of course if Darren Thomas wins I will allow you to all jump up and down on it.

5        Please don’t vote for me " I am gallantly excluding myself " and don’t vote for yourselves, even if your name’s Steve Black.

6        I will post the winning poem in the blog section, together with commentary as close to the 7th of each month as possible.

I am not sure how successful this award will be.  I will run the competition for a couple of months.  If it isn’t needed, wanted or enjoyed by site members, I will wind it up.

I hope we will all continue to enjoy POM " there are some very worthy poems and poets on there. If anyone is confused by just why I am bothering to do this they may wish to read the discussion thread on POM " though it is a very long one.

Nice one Isobel, I have been saying similar to you for a while - although some of the POMs are great they're often by people who have posted nothing for ages!

In my opinion POM should be POM not a poem from months ago. The next months poem is then selected by the winner obviously who in a lot of cases (not all) won't be arsed about what has been going on recently on WOL.

Count me in, whoever wins I will sleep better knowing that POM is one from the last month from an active member Jeff X

Great idea Isobel but look at the peeps who have bothered to put a comment up here. All good poets who are actively involved with this web site and comment regularly on the work of others. How many more put stuff up on a very regular basis and never bother to put a comment on any one elses work? A great many I think!
If this idea is to be a success, and I really hope it will be, then we need more participation from fellow poets, and not just the stalwart few!!

Yep - there are probably plenty of holes in it - as Janet has already pointed out - you two do have a lot in common! LOL
The biggest problem will be getting significant numbers to read the work of others, bothering to think about it and place a vote. The award will be meaningless if an insignifcant number choose the best poem.
Would charging a £1 entrance fee and restricting the entry to one poem per poet help? I'm not sure it would. Who could be arsed going through the admin of paying a pound to anyone? I do think that blogs need to be restricted in general and that one is down to Admin - they should start to think about putting rules in place, particularly as we seem to be witnessing a membership boom.
I do like the idea of raising funds for WOL though - so it is something I'm happy to think about for the future. Perhaps for now it is a question of sucking and seeing. Look forward to discussing it further on Thursday. Thanks for your input - it is nice to know that people are at least giving it some thought.

Hi Isobel - to be honest, I'm still not too sure if the concept of 'WOLOP' has been fully explored before its trial period has began. If the whole thing is 'a work in progress' and further ideas and suggestions are still considered that may improve or, at the very least, reinforce some of the ideas that have allowed WOLOP' to arrive at this point, then it may increase its chances of what we could deem 'a success'.
In effect, it's a poetry competition.

Out the 550+ members on this site, how many make an active contribution where its reasonable to conclude that they may rustle the enthusiasm to read through many, many blogs. Apply subjective and/or artistic reasoning (impartially) and then vote?

And how does WOL admin benefit from all this?

Does it consolidate the site as the front-runner in 'Encouraging PERFORMANCE poetry'?

There are many questions which, I s'pose, can only be answered once we've 'sucked and seen'.

However, at the very least, I would limit participants to how many pieces they can contribute and submit OR consider charging £1.00 per poem (all profits returning to WOL) this may sound vulgar but as we know, WOL is not receiving anywhere near the funding it once was and any monies I'm sure would be grately received.

I'm sure that we can speak about this next week at The Tudor. Potentially, WOLOP is a good idea but in my opinion and as it stands - a ship's been launched with a few holes in its stern.

Premature congratulation - just love it - only you could come up with something like that Anthony. Nice of you to drop in. Glad you like my piccie - me revolutionary? Never! It's just that red is my favourite colour. Yes, I agree that the success of this will depend on how many people vote. People who post a lot but don't comment will need to start being less selfish. If we only get the hard core voting it will all be a bit silly - not much of a pole... It looks like it will be another bumper month though - 50 odd poems and we're only on the 4th - some people have posted as many as 5 already though - perhaps that gives them an unfair advantage (tee hee).

A whole month early Winston? Now that's what I call "premature congratulation"!

Why the Che pic Isobel? Are you heading up the WOL insurgency? Vive la Revolution!

This is potentially a great idea - and a big thank you to Isobel for pursuing it. Its success will of course, depend on participation by as many contributors as possible. I would urge everyone to support Isobel in this endeavour. It should be quite fascinating to see which works are popularly approved by poetic peers. (Oops, accidental alliteration - sorry!)

Versers unite - you have nothing to lose but your brains!

A.E.

Thank you Paul - I never envy you the task of keeping this rowdy, self opiniated bunch of poets in line - you do a wonderful job. I am grateful for your support and tolerance. x
