Goodnight Trellick

Riding the night train home
you fall asleep, head on my shoulder
I watch our reflection in the glass
watching our reflection
age
improve
converge
expand
as you sleep
on the night train home…

It’s a short walk on a summer evening
a short walk to our place
my arm around your shoulder
pulling you in close
I look up into the sky
deeply
drunken
grateful
expansive
but I see no stars there
on the short walk to our place…

There are small things I would change
O! To see the stars again
to not need night trains anymore
a new adventure
in a looser place
and with me
I’d take only you…

There are big changes I’d gladly make
O! To experience more of this life
pour our love into some more generous cup
continue this adventure
in a more textured place
and with me, with me
I’d take only you…

So goodnight Sindercombe
goodnight Zippy’s
goodnight Westfield
goodnight Trellick
I’ll pack the car tonight
pack the car and drive tonight
somewhere new
with me, with me, with me
I’ll take only you…
