absinthe makes the heart grow fonder

Sometimes I stare

At the enamelled absinthe poster

We bought from a thrift store in Montmartre

An overpriced attempt

To become more cultured

I look at the lady

In her green dress

And her green hat

Pouring green liquor

Into Emíle Cohl’s cup

And I remember

The night before we bought it

We sat up all night

In the cemetery where Dumas was buried

(I had to tell you who he was)

And we drank from a bottle

Of pale green absinthe

And convinced ourselves

We were hallucinating

(They stopped putting wormwood in years ago)

Desperate to feel

To mean

Something more

Than just bones

More than just an enamelled sign

And a return ticket home.

Aye, another cracker from you Stu!

Chockfull of interesting details and memories, and I love the self-awareness shown in several lines, but this one in particular:

An overpriced attempt
To become more cultured

A terrific poem, in every way, subject, thought and craftsmanship. The final six lines are brilliant in their philosophical ripples.

And I like the 'wormwood' line because it pokes 'self-fun'.

This is wonderfully crafted Stu. You take us with you in this piece. We've all done it and would love to do it again.
Easy Rider crossed my mind when you talk about the cemetery. Montmartre-perfect!

I didn't need the line about wormwood (although I get the reasoning) I think it sticks out a little.

Great piece nonetheless.

Well done,

Graham

This is very neatly put together Stu. I like the continued use of the word green. Rounded off nicely with
More than just an enamelled sign
And a return ticket home.
Nicely done
