THE VOICE OF SUMMER

One of the more fondly recalled aspects of my working life was occasional employment

at Lords when test matches were played back in the 70s and 80s.  Great days.  Richie

Benaud was as much a part of the scene as that world-famous famous venue and, just

like Sir Peter O'Sullevan in racing, his voice was synonymous with his chosen sport.

................................................................

With tones as calm and measured

As his run up to the crease,

His tenure has been treasured

But we only held the lease.

He's left the field at close of play,

And as we bid goodbye,

I have the feeling he might say...

No tear (no fear!)...no sigh.

Richie Benaud - gentleman,

True Spirit of your Sport,

Your voice brings summer back again

And in the slips of time we're caught.

............................................................

Thanks JC.
Interesting that those in sport don't get the eulogies in
verse that would have been their reward from past
generations. He is certainly among the more deserving!

Excellent tribute, MC.
I can just remember the great man's playing days, Even then he struck me as a sport (in the old fashioned sense of the term) and a gentleman.
I ranked him alongside Bill McLaren and John Arlott as one of the great understaters of sports commentary.
