'Comic superhero' Jonathan Edwards wins Costa prize for poetry

entry picture

Jonathan Edwards has won the Costa poetry prize with his first collection, My Family and Other Superheroes (Seren). Reviewing it for Write Out Loud last year, Dave Morgan said Edwards’s poems were about “customs and culture of the hill tribes of south Wales”. The Costa judges said: “We haven’t had as much fun reading a poetry collection in ages. Joyous, brilliant and moving – this is a poet to celebrate.” Next month Edwards will be running an online course for the Poetry School, titled 'No laughs please, we're poets - can comic poetry be good poetry?’  In his case, the answer certainly seems to be, Yes. The Bookseller reported on Tuesday that Seren was reprinting the collection, after it sold out on Amazon. You can read about all the Costa category winners, which were announced on BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme on Monday night, and those shortlisted for each category, here
