Anniversary

that night, I woke and remembered
wrapped in grief
in the tangle of my sheets
I couldn't sleep
I wound your old sweater round my neck
sinking in
breathing in the very scent of you

by the lake, gusts of wind stirred the leaves
the shivering trees
flashing lights from passing cars lit the shallows
shoals of ghostly fish slid by
like traffic on a neon-lit motorway
mimicking the arc of a shooting star's decline
are you up there somewhere or was that you
bowing out in a blaze of glory like you always do
attention-seeking amongst the heavenly host
making the most
of your last chance to shine?

spectral ducks and swans coast
in silent search for food
only their wake betraying
as I watched in quiet communion
it seemed only you slept that night
sleep peacefully tonight is what I'm saying.

I'm catching up. This poem aches it's so full of yearning, and loss. Some beautiful sonics in here and again I can hear this being performed. You build in movement by the structure of your lines. This is glorious:

shoals of ghostly fish slid by
like traffic on a neon-lit motorway

Thank you, Cynthia. I find it quite difficult, even daring, to delete a word or even a line or two. It is something I remembered from painting that however much I might like a particular passage, if it doesn't fit, I have to let it go.

This is very touching, without being melodramatic. Once again it is the use of vivid details for your chosen images, and the well-chosen words to express them, that bring the poem to life. Always use every word with great fastidiousness, and your poems will resonate. Technique can be taught (sort -of) but not ideas. They come only from yourself.
