Salford Shopping City

entry picture

It’s Salford Shopping City in the spring

The wind blows plastic bags round and around

The taxis race round roundabouts. Swearing,

A woman with Tourette’s withdraws her pounds

The bus-stop throbs as people are let down

A man skulks smoking outside Bargain Booze

The Pound Shops, William Hills, Woolworths (closed down)

The Flea Market empty but for refuse

At quarter to five, long Post Office queues

When my turn comes I find myself chatting

To a friendly blonde clerk eager to expound

The new Post Office credit card. Refuse -

How could I? But I did, remembering

How long it’s taken to get my debts down

Nice observations in this one. I have worked in this place a couple of times and it feels rather cut off from anywhere despite been in the middle of a massive built up area if that makes sense. Great stuff, Winston

Hi Antonionioni,
I enjoyed this one too. I found myself saying Salford city shopping centre though before i reached the end of that line.

Very colourful and it brought back fond memories for me too. :-)

Hi Tony,
Many years ago I was at Uni in Salford. I came to love the place in all its urban splendour. Your verse brought back happy memories of the precinct!
Regards,
A.E.

i quite like this as it took me back to when i lived in manchester2 couple of years ago and especially like the throbbing bus stop as it creates a great picture and its a feeling i get at least once a week to unfortunately.
