Wtf?

entry picture

I confess I‘m enormously disappointed by the overuse of the word “fuck” in modern writing.

“Wtf?”, “Ffs!”, “LMFAO”.

I’m not offended by it.  Well, not in the sense that it is meant to be offensive.  What dispirits me is the lack of imagination among a group of people who pride themselves on trying to say things in a new way; who otherwise manipulate language so skilfully but choose to populate their writing so vacuously.

The word seems to me to have become an empty vessel which I associate with phrases like “Obviously…”, “…literally…”, “ she was like…”,.

Now I’m no glasshouse flower in this arena.  I’ve effed and jeffed a fair bit myself in my writing and in everyday conversation; but I’d like to think that it served purpose.

So, there it is.  A plea for a less gratuitous usage.  Take it on board if you will.

If not…

…fuck off.

Well said - I too have used it, eg. when nearly being killed by a manic motorist, or having been extreeeemely annoyed. Its use doesn't offend me, unless by children. Overuse of ANY word lessens its impact.

It's funny how attitudes vary towards that word from culture to culture - and geographical region even.

I always found it much more highly used down South and more frowned upon up North. The Irish use it like anyone else would say damn.

It does seem to be embedding itself into our vernacular in subtle ways.

Children now say 'What the...' not really realising the implications of what they are saying.

I tend to like using it for real effect - if I'm exceedingly, exceedingly angry - if it becomes too everyday - what do you use for effect?

I'd be rather disappointed if anyone didn't see that coming.

Personally, I like to remember the lovely Vivienne
Leigh as "Scarlet O'Hara".
I enjoy watching faces when I scowl and exclaim
with some vehemence "Oh...F...iddle-dee-dee"!
