The Jesus Gene

entry picture

The Jesus Gene

In a Papal palace

a piece no bigger than a postage stamp

is missing

from the pranksters shroud.

Christopher waits on tables

at the local Pizza Hut

and changes water for wine

upon request.

His mother is a virgin,

in all but hymen,

and keeps a photo of a pipette

upon the mantelpiece.

She tells Christopher

it was an Immaculate Conception

at the research lab,

when he asks about his father.

The Jesus Gene was added

to an unknown donors sperm

and Christopher

was created in his image

Leonardo, the Johannite heretic,

crucified a criminal

and daubed his crimson

on a pristine canvas.

The hungry zealots

fed upon its mystery

and blindly hid their treasure

deep in vaults.

Pray for Christopher,

who knows not of his father

and believes he carries

the building blocks of Christ,

for when the pious multitudes

discover his lineage

they will hang him from a cross

for all to see.

This is really superb. And intellectual too! The references are very stimulating to much thought. As is the originality of your ideas, as David says. I liked 'his mother is a virgin in all but hymen', because it is so ambiguous, and spreads out countless possible connotations. You must be a wide reader of many interests.

Oh what a brilliant poem Ian. I love it. I love all the religious symbolism and the irony (you're very good at that) and the very many messages.

What an original piece of work. It makes me think, it makes me feel - and I'm left feeling nailed to a cross. Wow!
